Owner/Operator of Mini Pig Farm and PigGear

I am the owner and operator of Mini Pig Farm as well as PigGear.
I no longer breed mini pigs, but I still have 4 of my own.
I started making pig harnesses in 2010 when I couldn't find a harness that fit right. PigGear was created when my mini pig customers needed a bigger size harness when their baby grew out of the one I provided to them.

Icuras with DeanYes, we hear all about service dogs and how they are allowed to go everywhere with their owner. But did you know that people are actually allowed to have  a service pig?  Studies have shown that having a pet in your life can help you live a healthier and happier life.

” Pets can ease loneliness, reduce stress, promote social interaction, encourage exercise and playfulness, and provide us with unconditional love and affection.’ Provided by Helpguide.org in their post  The Therapeutic Benefits of Pets.

Not everyone realizes the benefits of pigs though. Their are a ton of people out there trying to bring awareness to the public about the benefits of having a pet pig, but there are even more trying to convince you that a pet pig is just a smaller farm pig .  I am not going to try to convince you that pigs are the perfect pet for all people, but I will tell you you that mini pigs can be the perfect pet for many. Some people are allergic to dogs and cats, so that pet is totally out of the question. There are tons of people that need some kind of pet for emotional support, which is why it is important to advise them of the benefits of mini pigs. I have read stories and have contributed to petitions from families fighting to keep their child’s pet pig in the home. This is a huge challenge for apartment and subdivision dwellers because  their neighbors are not educated enough. Mini Pigs can be trained to do almost anything and have proven to be a huge emotional support for people in need of that. That is why more and more mini pigs are becoming certified service animals.

Trying to bring awareness to the world is a difficult task which is why I am asking everyone to help. There is a perfect way for people to get involved and help others understand how truly rewarding a pet pig can be.  Icarus ( the pig) has become pretty popular with the Supernatural fans and they would like to see him in Burbank, Ca for the Salute to Supernatural convention.  Unfortunately, he lives in Dallas, Tx so he needs a little bit of help getting there.  You can read more about him and help him get to BurCon by going to HERE.

PigGear and his handler have a special outfit for him to wear. You don’t want to miss it.

If you are a supernatural fan, then you will really enjoy the picture below. Many of my Facebook friends have seen these before, but for those of you that haven’t, enjoy.

I can not take credit for any of the photos taken at this event.

I have been making pig clothes for a couple years now and love seeing the results of my work on all the cute little piggies out there.  Most people go to PigGear to buy a harness for their mini pig, but once they get to the site, they see that PigGear has more than just pig harnesses.

I have to admit, the color combinations that my customers pick, kinda blow my mind. I think ” OMG that is going to look horrible together” but then when I put the outfit together I am totally surprised. I guess my customers know more than I do. That is why I just give everyone the option to choose the colors themselves.

Here are a few pictures of customer created cover-ups.

As you can see, the color combinations are unlimited. This is just a small sample of the many pictures that are sent to me. You can see more pictures and custom clothing orders that I have done on my PigGear FaceBook Page too.

Please contact me if you are reading this and you would like you piggy featured on this page with his/her PigGear. I LOVE to see the pictures and so does everyone else, so please share.

Look no further, we have re-designed our pet pig directory. We used to have a plain ole directory listing page where you could find all the breeders in one place, but now it’s even better.

Mini Pig breeders are being added all the time, so you should really book mark this site and come back often. We have advanced the site and are now allowing pet pig parents to rate their breeder and let everyone know how their experiences have been. All listings and comments are monitored and will not be approved until verified. Our rating system is only available to those that are registered to prevent abuse. We are not brokers or anyway associated with any of the breeders listed on this site. We are only trying to help the good ethical breeders and legit rescue facilities.

Some of the breeders/ Rescues listed here have offered some articles to get the truth out about pet pigs. I know that there are farms promising the smallest pigs around, and they also claim that they will only get to be 10lbs when full grown. Some of those breeders might even be listed on this site.  If you personally have one of these pigs, please comment on the breeder and provide pictures so that we can see a healthy 10lb 3 +year old.

What people don’t seem to realize is that a mini pig may be 50 lbs, but is no bigger than a bull dog. I believe that people have it in their head that a 50lb pig is huge.

That is not the case at all. The picture on the right is one of my babies at approximately 40lbs. as you can see, she is very healthy and very small.

Phebe

The gate in the back show this. Yes, she did fit in a teacup when she was a baby, but so do all piglets. So what I am saying is, don’t scour the internet looking for the smallest pig you can find, instead look for the healthiest and the breeder that goes the extra mile to make sure that you are prepared for the adventure that follows.

I really have to stress the fact that this is NOT a case where ” you get what you pay for”. I have seen breeders charging thousands of dollars for a pig that ended up being over 100lbs where some of them charge 300 for the ones that stay around 50 lbs. I do understand the cost involved in raising them and vet bills and all of that, I should, I did if myself. But to charge 3k to 5k for a pig is just ridiculous to me.

Lets break it down a bit. Yes, a breeder has to search around and purchase the best breeding stock they can find to get started. Then pair them up and wait 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days for the babies to be born. Feed for the mom goes up ( If you are a good breeder) during the time the sow in pregnant and while she is nursing her babies. She will nurse them for around 6 weeks ( different breeders have different timelines) I personally kept my babies with their mom for 6 weeks unless the mom decided she didn’t want them around her. They should be starting to eat on their own by this time.

The vet bill can be around 200 to have the pig spayed or neutered. Some vets won’t do this that early, but most will spay/neuter at around 8 weeks. If you are purchasing a piglet that has not been spayed/neutered, make sure that you do this as soon as your vet allows. The boys can usually be neutered pretty early, but to spay the female is a lot more invasive so some vets like to wait awhile. Just because your pig has not been spayed, does not mean that they are coming from a bad breeder, it just means that they or their vet do not believe it is safe for the the girl yet. Most ethical breeders will make you sign a contract saying that you will have this done on your own within a certain period of time. If you do not get this done, you will have a very unruly pet pig.  Unfortunately this is when most of the pet pigs end up in a sanctuary. Instead of being educated, people are fed up with the behavior and decide that maybe a pig wasn’t their best choice for a pet. Most of the pigs in the sanctuaries get spayed/neutered as soon as they can and would be an awesome pet for for someone. But since everyone is out there looking for the little bitty babies, these discarded pigs are feeling like an orphan that nobody wants. Don’t get me wrong, the shelters give them as much love as they can, but there are so many of them that one on one attention is almost impossible. I put shelters on the pet pig directory in the hopes that people will choose to adopt some of the pigs there before they spend thousands of dollars on a pig that might just get to be the same size as the ones in the shelter.

So why 3k to 5k for a baby? I have no clue.

Now, back on the subject of the directory. We are trying to bring together all of the ethical breeders, shelters, and vet together in one place as well as providing you all the information you will need to provide for your new pet pig. I really hope that you find this site useful.

I just want to remind everyone to think about their little pigs when you plan you 4th of July party or event. Please make sure that you baby is locked in a safe place before setting off your fireworks.

I know that everyone likes to show off their new baby during big parties and events, but PLEASE think about your baby at this time. Your friends and family can visit your baby at any time after the event. Piglets are nervous by nature and to add to their stress could be devastating.

Lots of pets end up missing and scared during the excitement of the popping and banging of fireworks, and I would hate to see anybody loose their baby and worse for their baby to loose them. I can only imagine how horrifying that must be for any pet.

I am so sick of hearing the stories about people having problems with pigs as pets. There are tons of posts on Facebook asking for people to sign a petition so that they will be able to keep their pet pig in their home.  This is really sad to me, because it seems like the people that are bitching the most are the ones that either don’t have any pets at all or they are the ones that have little tiny dogs.

I worked in the cable industry for 15 years visiting multiple houses per day in all kinds of different areas. I have to say that I have NEVER been hurt by a pet pig. I have been bitten, scratched, clawed, and charged, but never by a pig. I hated going to houses that had those little yippy dogs, because honestly they scare me. Three out of the four times that I was bit ( where customers actually admitted that their dog bit me) was by small dogs. One time 2 Yorkies jumped on my leg and kept biting my until the owner finally came over to help. Another time it was a Chihuahua that bit me just for walking in the door (while in the owner’s arms). And I can’t tell you how many times a small dog bit my ankle when I walked in the door. The thing that always bugged me though is I ALWAYS got the same response from their owner ” Wow, he/she has never done that before”. I find that very hard to believe in most cases because of their highly aggressive nature. Cats are another story, they can be loving one minute and then just change because you touched them in the wrong place. I can’t even begin to count how many times I  walked out of a house with cat scratches. And last but not least, I was actually chased out of a yard buy Geese. I know, this one is pretty funny, but I was paying too much attention to the barking dogs that I didn’t even realize that the Geese had cornered me on the porch.  I really didn’t realize how mean and fast Geese could be until I made a mad dash to my car and ended up with bite marks on the back of my legs.

So I guess my question is, Why are people so against having pigs as pets? I have never been bitten, scratched or chased  by one. They are very clean and do not bark at all hours of the night. They do not run around the neighborhood getting in to people’s trash. Chances are that they are not going to break out, and even if they do, it only takes a few Cheerios to get them to come back.

There are tons of people opposed to having pigs as pets, but they never actually say why they are opposed. Is it because they think that they are smelly and dirty? Or maybe because they can’t imagine eating their bacon in the morning while looking next door at the pig in the back yard.

I would love to hear the reasons that people are giving for not wanting pigs in their neighborhood. So please comment below. Maybe we can help people understand instead of fighting constantly about the issue.

I  have to share this incredible portrait that I had done of a piglet that I lost a couple years ago. He was very special to me because he fought so hard to stay alive and also because I tried sooo hard to save him. I knew that it was going to be a fight since he was so small and frail from birth, but I HAD to try. I managed to keep him alive for only a few days, but then his little body couldn’t handle it anymore so he gave up. We had this connection that I can’t even explain. I know that there are tons of people that have lost a pet ( not just a pig) and  would like a special way to remember them. Well, Vickie Craig from Creekside Farm Tiny Oinkers  is a very talented artist that has created the perfect way to do that. All you have to do is send her a picture and she will transform it in to a beautiful work of art. It doesn’t have to be a pet that you lost ( like me), it can be any animal picture that you want on wood. Doesn’t even have to be your pet.

Here is what she did for me.

I am trying so hard to learn how to screen print on my piggy Ts and I have to tell you, It’s not as easy as I thought it would be. Previously my Piggy Ts cam with your pig’s name or some saying embroidered on the back. But I started thinking that maybe we should go a little bit more creative. I kept seeing these beautiful designs that people were doing with screen printing and I thought ” I am a pretty creative person, I can do this”.

I read a ton of stuff about screen printing and I cam across this machine called the Yudu Personal Screen Printer.  I looked at these a few years ago and wanted one then, but I really couldn’t justify spending that much money of something that I just wanted to play with. Well now that I have PigGear and can make Piggy T-shirts, and whatever else I can come up with, I was finally able to purchase one.  The machine is pretty cool, and what I have read is that you are much better off  “hacking your Yudu Screen” instead of  using the very expensive films that Yudu would like you to use. I am waiting for my supplies now, and hopefully this will be easier and less expensive to do.

Here is a link for the supplies and instructions on how to do it if you are interested. (Hack the Yudu Screen Liquid Emulsion Kit (Replaces 50 Yudu Emulsion Sheets)

So anyway, as soon as I am able to start the screen printing, I will be offering tons of stuff at PigGear.  I’m sure that I won’t become a pro over night, but I am hoping that I can get pretty good at it before I go bankrupt.  In the meantime, I asked for some suggestions from Facebook  on designs and I have to say, people are pretty clever.

Here are the ones that I decided to use for my new designs ( If I can ever get it to work right)

There are sooo many more that I will have to try as well, but I figured that 3 would be a great start. And if by chance I can’t figure out this screen printing thing, I can as embroider them Right?

Here are the designed that I made with the 3 saying above. Let me know what you think.

I will keep everyone updated on my progress. Thank You for understanding.

Vickie has been pretty busy. We have just posted some more of her jewelry on PigGear.

If you love pigs, then you will love the bracelets and necklaces that Vickie makes. Beware though, it might be pretty hard to choose one so you might have to pick a couple so that you can match your attire for the day.

april jewerly 022

She has necklaces for men too, so don’t worry. Vickie doesn’t want to discriminate again all of you pig lovin’ men.

The Women’s chain is 20 inches, Men’s chain is 23 inches. Chains are silver plated.

There are multiple bracelets to choose from, and no two are the same. Vickie shows pride in her work, so no cheap stuff here.

The growth rate of domestic swine is significantly different from that of miniature breeds. There has been many questions relating to this topic, This is what the research teams with Gottening research stated: The epiphyses of the long bones are not completely closed in domestic swine until approximately 3.5 years. Miniature swine vary depending upon the stature of the animal. For example, Yucatan micro swine have epiphyseal closure at 1.5 – 2.0 years, whereas standard Yucatans have closure at 3.0 – 3.5 yrs.

So now that tax time is coming to an end, and of course I am still not finished with mine, I was wondering something. Since pigs are still considered livestock in most places, does that mean that I can claim their feed, enclosures, blankets, etc… as farm expenses? My guess is that knowing our government they will say no because my pigs are pets. so why is it that if things work to our benefit, it isn’t ok but if it works to theirs than it is?

My problem is, we have to fight tooth and nail in order to convince our local government to allow pigs in residential areas because they are “Still considered Swine” and then we have to fight again if we want to claim them as swine on our taxes. It’s kinda funny to me how people ( us included) try to bend every rule that we can when it benefits us.

I guess since I am not a fan of audits, I should stay clear of this one.

I finally finished reading all three of the book that I have found about pet pigs. Even though some people refer to pet pigs by different names, like teacup pigs, micro pigs, mini pot bellied pigs and so on, they are ultimately the same thing, a pet pig.

I really want to direct your attention to an article that was posted on our PigFacts page today on Natural Behavior  Provided by Vickie Craig and written by Dave.

Having a pet pig in your house or even in your backyard can be pretty aggravating at times. Understanding what your pig needs and wants are will help you enjoy your pig. I have found that most people really don’t know what they are getting when they purchase their pet pig. They see these little cuties and the desire to have one out weighs the common sense.

Honestly, most of us know exactly what kind of dog we will buy before even looking for one. We have this checklist in our heads of questions to ask ourselves.

  1. Will this dog be good around my kids?
  2. Will my new dog need to be inside or outside?
  3. Will I have the time to train my puppy?
  4. What kind of things will I need ( dog bed/ Dog house, food, etc…

There are tons more, but most people don’t ask those questions when they buy a pig. Believe me, I KNOW how cute the little piglets are and I fell victim to that as well with my first mini pig Phebe. But thank God I live on 5 acres and was able to let her out of the house to run around the yard and be a pig.  I did breed them for awhile and sold to people that live in apartments and small communities, but I honestly wouldn’t suggest it unless you have some place to let the pig out in the yard.

I got an email yesterday from a lady and it reminded me that I really haven’t touched on this subject. I actually get a ton of people with this exact problem contacting all the time. In her email she goes on to say:

Everything was going great, he was using his litter box, and seemed to be happy when we got home. Then about a month later, his mood started changing, and he was peeing everywhere. So we knew it was time to get him fixed. Once we got him fixed, it got even worse. He pees in every nook and cranny in the house now, won’t even use his litter box, will literally pee 2 inches from it. We thought maybe it was time to give him more space. So we gave him the Whole kitchen and barricaded it off from the living room. Well he found a way to break free, and when we arrived home from work one night, there was poop everywhere!

Anyways, this week has been the worst so far. We got a bigger wall to block him off while we are at work, and come to find out that he can jump it. So far this week, He has broken a sentimental lamp of mine, eaten an ink pen, chewed up a remote, and my whole carpet has pee stains from him. We LOVE Link more than anything, and do not want to give him up. But what is causing this? Is it because we are gone all day, and he is acting out?

We contacted the breeder and she asked if he was fixed, and if we “scolded” him when he made an accident on the floor. We told her yes, that when he makes accidents on the floor, we flick him in the nose and put him in timeout for 10 minutes. Then when he comes out, he does it again. So he goes right back in timeout. She then told us to contact our vet. Our vet really didnt know much. We knew more about Micro mini pigs than she did

She got her baby at 4 weeks old and of course he wasn’t fixed when she got him ( I think everyone knows how I feel about that already). Later in the email correspondence I found out that they also adopted a dog and has recently put him outside in the yard.

My Response:

This happens a lot believe it or not. Positive discipline is actually the only thing that works with them. Think of him as your child, if you yell at him then he will not respond well, but if you give him a praise when he does something good, then he will do it all the time. Pigs especially respond well with praise and food. Try using Cheerios when he does well.

A few questions for you though:

Did anything change in the house. ( used to be at home and now went back to work, not paying as much attention to him as you did when he was smaller, etc…)

Also you said that you thought he needed more room. That is actually not the case. You need to give him a smaller space. Just enough room for his bed, food and litter box. They typically will not go where they eat or sleep so the only choice he would have is the litter box. You can also try pee pads instead of a litter box, sometimes they feel too big for the box and don’t want to use it anymore. I don’t know what kind of box you are using, but I use a dog litter box, which is bigger.

In conclusion, she is going to try my suggestions and get back to me on how they worked for her.

I would really like to hear any suggestions on this issue, so that I can pass them on to the next person that asks.
