This is way too cool. I like to play around with my websites, as you can probably tell by how much this one has changed since I started it, and PigGear is one that I can’t help but play around with.

I know that people love to pamper their pets, so if you haven’t heard yet, I have a site dedicated to clothes for pigs and pig harnesses.  Occasionally I have to do some updates on the software, which isn’t too much fun, but this time is was very exciting because I found this cool little bar that goes on the bottom of the site and if you click on the “Like” bottom then it automatically gives you 20% off of your purchase. There is also a “like” button on all of the products too, so you can share one item or all. My harnesses are already pretty cheap, especially for handmade items. But now with a 20% off price discount,  you can get them even cheaper. I also give you instructions on how to harness train your pig and a sample of my incredible mini pig soap. Can’t beat that deal for sure.

Most people pay a fortune for their pet pig and they don’t even come with any accessories like we used to give when we were breeding ( this still amazes me). So to get 20% off of you purchase is HUGE.  I had the mini potbelly pig harness for sale about a year after I started breeding and selling mini pigs. But then my customers started telling me that they wanted to spoil their pigs like most people spoil their little dogs. I did a little research and found that nobody had mini pig clothing so I then started my line of clothes for pigs. People are pretty funny though, because once they realized that I could sew, they started asking me to make all kinds of stuff for their pigs.

Custom Pig Clothes

Joy, one of my PigGear models, has a great family. Her mommy takes her to an assistant living facility to cheer up the elderly. I could tell that this was exciting to them because one day Joy showed up in one of the coverups that I make and the next day Park Centre called me to place a custom order. They sent me pictures of their logo, and with a bit of playing around, I was able to embroider it on to a couple cover-ups for them. As you can see below, Joy is truly a Ham, she even has her own facebook page . Check it out here

Of course once I realized what an incredible model she was, I had to use her on my PigGear site as well.

You can see more pictures of her and my other models  in the photo gallery at www.piggear.com. Some of the pictures you will see there are not models, but are very spoiled little pigs with families that like to show them off. So go check them out, it will put a smile on your face for sure.

Go to the PigGear Gallery Here

And while you are there, click the “like” button on that cool bar at the bottom of the page or one one of the individual products that you like and get 20% off your first order.

You will still get free  first class shipping with any order over $100.00 too.

Looking through my emails and messages today, I came across one that really needed my attention. I got so caught up in responding to her dilemma that I totally forgot to comment about it on my blog. Truth is, I was pretty pissed off .

These breeders don’t take in to consideration the feeling that get hurt when they lie to their customers. People are getting their hearts broken and spending tons of money in the process. Ok, let me start over now that I’m done with my little rant.

The Message I recieved

I won’t give any names because I don’t want to hurt her any more than she has already been hurt, but I will quote parts of her message for you so that you will understand the rant above.

She wrote:

“I am due to get a mini piglet baby but she told me it was going to be 10 day’s old and it is eating warm milk and bread is that good for them and how many time’s a day do I feed it?”

WHAT!! I have never heard of giving a baby pig bread. sure it will eat it, but there isn’t any real nutrition in it. All that will do is fatten the “Micro Pig” up. Keep feeding it like that and it won’t be micro for long. And why on earth would a reputable breeder send a 10 day old piglet away. I know, they wouldn’t.

A reputable breeder will keep the baby with it’s mom for at least 6 weeks. Before anyone gets too pissed off at me for saying that, let me clarify.  I used to breed pigs of all sizes and I know that sometimes the mom will reject them or worse. But what I am saying is there are too many people that LIKE to take the baby away at a few days and start bottle feeding them because they claim that they are friendlier that way. I have personally found that not to be true.

My very first mini pig (Phebe)was 8 weeks old when I got her and she is just as friendly as any of the other ones that I have ( I currently have 4 ). One of the babies that I kept was from a litter where the mom tried to kill them and that was horrible. I have to bottle feed the babies and I have to tell you, that is not an easy task. They all want to eat at the same time and are all starving to death. Kudos to the people that have twins, triplets, quads or more.

Anyway back to my story: After recieving this message, my advice to her was to get Unimilk and add some baby cereal to it. We use  Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain, Rice Cereal because we try to do everything as Organic as possible. But you can just pick some up from your local grocery store too. With the baby being only 10 days old I suggested that she feed him every 2-3 hours the first couple weeks and then just start spreading it out to 3-4 hours and so on. By the time he gets to 6 weeks he should be eating twice a day ( with treats in between of course lol).

Second Message Came with Happy News

Thank you so much for getting back to me I wanted to let you know he is doing great and eating good and is already going potty outside He loves to be cuddle up in are blanket’s on are bed I have been giving him soft milk Mauzai food mini youth pig feed and baby cereal I only give him a bit at a time so that i don’t hurt is belly I have been keeping him warm in a nice pet taxi and blanket’s inside and i cover the top that has been keeping him warm. He is 16 day’s old now.

I was so happy to get this message from her. She is doing a great job taking care of this piglet that she really shouldn’t have had yet. One of the hardest things I have had to do is try to keep a baby pig alive when it is taken too early or rejected.

Third Message Came With Great Pain

I am very sad to say that he has passed away at 3 am. I was up with him all night until he went I have no clue why or how he got so sick so fast but he has been placed in his blanket he loved so much and now he is resting in peace and is no longer hurting.

My Little Heart Break

RIP Little Angel

I cry every time I get messages like this. She did everything she could to care for this baby. And after 6 days, if you are any kind of animal lover, you get so attached to the baby. And no matter how much they try and how much they do, I still get the same kind of message from them “I am so hurt and so upset I feel like I did something wrong”. I have had a couple pass as well, so I really understand how much pain she is feeling.

I am happy to say that she did end up getting another baby a couple months later and is very happy with her new healthy baby girl.

I hate that people have to go through all of that pain and I can only help them so much. I can’t even tell you how many messages I get on this type of situation. That is the key reason that I set up a directory so that people can comment about the different breeders that they have come in contact with. I searched all over the internet and didn’t come up with anything that could help people find a reputable breeder. I was actually amazed because there are directories for everything else.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and possibly anything that would help the next person ( and there will be a next person) that I get a message like this from.

Has anyone heard of the breeder from mytinypigs.com?
Got an email from someone that isn’t very happy with them. Their pigs are very pricey. One of them says “Spotted MALE will be 10 pounds $3500”. Now I really want to see that. A full grown pig at 10lbs, heck ya. $3500 HELL NO!!!
The lady that contacted me said that her pig is 2 years old and 92lbs. That is slightly larger than the eight to 12 pounds as promised.
I wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention to see if anyone has a pig from this person that has stayed under 20lbs and let you know that
I added them to my directory ( www.minipigfarm.com/directory ) if you would like to write a review on them or anyone else.
I really want to stop breeders from ripping people off. I am not saying that they are doing that, I am wanting to find out more about them first lol. People get really attached to their pigs and I believe a lot of breeders depend on that. So once they get over the desired weight, they keep them ( with any luck) and the breeder never pays for misleading the customer.
Please help me stop the bad breeders by commenting on the my directory or allowing me to use your comments from here.

I get a ton of emails from people looking for good mini pig breeders in their area. I put a breeders directory here  and hope to have enough reputable breeders listed so that my visitors won’t have to search forever looking for someone they can trust. I have also included some mini pig vets and pig rescues.
If you happen to know of a mini pig breeder/vet/rescue that you trust, please contact me so that I can add them.  I will contact every one of them before I add them to my site and ask them a few question to determine their validity. I will not list piggy mill type operations. Or people claiming to be a rescue just wanting a hand out. Please make sure the rescue facility is a  501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation.

I have included a rating/review  system on the directory, so please offer your opinion. Even though someone has a great review on my directory site, that does not mean that they are actually honest reviews ( people lie to get your business).

Ask them the following questions before committing to your purchase:
  1. Do you have the parents on the property? ( See how big they are full grown to get an idea of how big your pig will get )
  2. How old are the parents? ( Not full grown until age 3 )
  3. Are your pigs vet checked and up to date on shots? ( Most people don’t use a vet and don’t’ give shots. )
  4. Are they bottle fed or do they stay with their mom for at least 4 weeks. ( It is healthier for the baby to get the nutrition from their mom )
  5. If something happens where I can’t keep my baby, will you take it back (most of the time they will but you won’t get your money back)
  6. Do they offer support if you have a problem. ( Get a phone number )
Hope this helps
If you happen to find one in another state and it needs to be shipped to you, please read my post “When Pigs Fly“. Most people use Delta to ship their pigs. Read that post and you will see why I will never use them again.
Once you get your pig, you should start harness training instantly. I have custom line of pig harnesses, cover-ups and accessories I call Pig Gear.
if you are interested, please visit my site at www.piggear.com.

Who are they flying with? I know that I have mentioned that we don’t breed anymore mini pigs anymore. But when we did breed, and we needed to ship them all over the states, we ran in to a few problems.

Our Delta Experience

We started doing some research and more people than not said that they use Delta.   We saw on their site that they have a program called Delta Dash and according to them,  our piglet wouldn’t be uncomfortable at all and would get to it’s destination very fast. Well that sounded good to us, so we agreed and when the first litter was ready to be shipped, we picked up the phone and made the necessary arrangements. The phone call didn’t go so well because we called a call center in Georgia ( I believe it was ) and they bounced us around a bit before we finally talked to someone that could help us. We got our reservations and contacted our customers to find let them know what time to be at the airport for their new baby.

The next couple days we had to drive to Tampa, which is about an hour drive for us, and go to the cargo area. First of all, I was pretty upset thinking that these babies would be going in the cargo. The man behind the counter reassured me that they would be safe and that they transport lots of pets this way. Still not happy with the idea, I reluctantly handed the babies to them and watched as they put them on a cart to take them to the airplane.  We had all the flight numbers and times at which they were do to arrive and our customers agreed to call us once they got their babies, so we headed home.

Once we arrived home, I quickly go on the computer to track the flights. The first one arrived on time and I didn’t hear from our customer right away so I called them. Yes, the baby got there safe and was as adorable as they expected. The second one arrived a bit late but the customer called and couldn’t get off the phone fast enough because she just wanted to play with her new friend. But before she got off the phone, she informed me that the Delta cargo man just kinda dropped the crate on the floor in front of her and she was pissed. She said that she screamed at him ” Hey!! That is my baby in there”. I guess the guy just looked at her like she was crazy.

Now the problems start

The third  baby delivered out of that litter didn’t work out as well as the other two. He was being shipped to North Carolina with a layover in Georgia. As we tracked this one, we noticed that the flight had arrived on time. We are thinking “Yes, this is great”, but not so fast. We called our customer and told them that we saw their flight had arrived and was just wondering how the baby was. They informed us that they haven’t gotten him yet. they said they would effeminately call us as soon as they got him. We waited almost an hour ( sitting on the edge of our seats ) and finally called them back. They still haven’t seen their piglet. No Way!  What could have happened? We proceeded to call Delta to find out what was going on . They said that all of the cargo was unloaded and they didn’t know where the pig was.  Another hour went by, calling everyone and our customers calling us. Still no pig. I looked on the net and found that the flight had gone back to Georgia and was going back to North Carolina. Delta checked that flight and believe it or not, the piglet was still in the cargo. He flew more in one day that I did in my life. Our customers finally got their baby 3 1/2 hours after they were supposed to. We were so upset and still had one more to go.

The forth and last piglet to be delivered went to New Jersey. We decided to make that a late flight because Delta told us that their cargo was not climate controlled and this was the hottest day in New Jersey so if we shipped him at night then it would be cooler for him. They was great and we were happy for that information. His plane was due to arrive at 12:00 pm. so our customers were at the airport and ready. When the plane got there, the night worker wouldn’t let them have the baby. They told them that they couldn’t have him unless they paid $150.00 or come back in the morning to get him. Since all of the normal worker were gone for the night, they had no way of telling why they needed to pay the $150.00. The flight was paid by us in full so we didn’t understand it either. The worst part was that the couple didn’t bring any cash with them, they didn’t think they would need it, so they had to figure out how to come up with the money to get him out of prison ( Patti’s words ). We ended up calling Delta the next morning to find out why this couple need to pay $150.00 when the fare was already paid for and their answer was, computer glitch.  They agreed to refund that money to us,  and we refunded our customers. One comment that the customer service lady said that we noted was ” You should fly them Continental instead”. I was shocked, but very happy that she told us that because from that day on we never used Delta again.

Now that was much harder than I ever expected it to be. It was bad enough that I was worried in the beginning, but now after all of that, I was frantic about shipping them at all.  Fortunately, we had other litters that need to be shipped and we took that Delta ladies advice and called Continental. Wow! what a pleasure that was.  Here is a quote from their site:

The best way to ship a mini pig is Continental for sure

Continental has a 24-hour Live Animal Desk (1-800-575-3335). Their PetSafe program tracks pets in cargo from origin to destination and offers miles to pet travelers. The cargo area is climate controlled, allows for bigger carriers and has its own designated cargo staff. Continental allows dogs, cats, pet rabbits and birds to be carried inside the cabin on most domestic flights. Only four pets per flight are allowed in the economy cabin.

All of that was true. We never had a problem with them at all.

So I guess what I am saying is, if you need to have your new piglet shipped to you, NEVER use Delta and always use Continental.

What should I feed my pig?

I know that this is a big subject. There are people out there saying that the only way to keep your pig small is to under feed it. Well I want to prove them wrong. We have been believers in treating our animals as well if not better than we treat ourselves. After tons of research, we found Mazuri Feed. Not everyone can get this in their local feed store and the shipping is high because of the weight. We actually convinced our local feed store in to keeping it in stock and they are glad they did.  Since they started stocking Mazuri, their mini pig feed sales have gone up. We chose this feed because of the in depth data that they provide. Here is the data sheet for the Youth blend.

Read More About Mazuri® Mini Pig Youth Diet

Feeding Directions:

Feed on a free-choice basis as creep feed from 7 days post-weaning (8 weeks of age or older). Continue feeding Mazuri Mini-Pig Youth Diet free-choice if rapid growth is desired or feed at a rate of 1.5-3% of current body weight to regulate growth rate. Do not underfeed.
Change to Mazuri Active Adult Diet as desired to regulate growth rate at 16 weeks of age or older. For gestating or lactating females, feed a mixture of 50% Active Adult Diet and 50% Youth Diet for increased energy. For higher energy, increase Youth Diet to 60% of daily intake.
When using a self-feeder, make sure it is adjusted to minimize feed wastage. Feeders should be well managed so as to provide adequate feeder space, prevent moisture condensation, mold and insect development. Always provide a source of fresh, clean water and adequate drinking space.  Provide a draft-free pen with a clean, dry sleeping area. The level of feed intake depends on many factors including environmental temperature, other feed available and activity. The feeding levels suggested below are appropriate for average living conditions.

An email I received today forced me to write this post.

People in general take advise from people only if it fits their needs at the time. What I mean by this is, say you want something really bad ( micro mini pig ) and all the websites out there are telling you that there is no guarantee that your pig will stay small. Then you find one site that claims they will stay the size of a teacup. You will believe that one site instead of taking the advice of all of the other sites. I am not saying that there aren’t any micro mini pigs out there still weighing in at under 20lbs after 3 years. All I am saying is that I have never seen one in person. Even if I did, how could I guarantee that it is full grown.

Well first off let me say:

  • If you want a really small pig, you are going to pay a lot of money for it.
  • If you think that your pig is going to stay the size of a teacup, think again.
  • Just because a breeder charges a ton of money for their pig, does not make them a good breeder.

Most people ask me where they can get a Royal Dandy micro mini pig without paying the ridiculous amount of money that they are asking for them. Unfortunately, the only way to get a Royal Dandy pig is from Royal Dandy themselves.

I can’t for the life of me figure out where these people get the prices that they charge for there pigs. When I was breeding, I calculated feed cost, supplies ( litter, harness and leash, etc…) vet charges, starter care package and just added a few bucks for taking care of them for the first 6-8 weeks. I’m sorry but 4-5 thousand dollars seems a bit high to me too.

Now is a great time to be thinking about how to keep your mini pig warm and dry through the winter months. I know that we are in Florida, and it really doesn’t get that cold down here but we still get some pretty bad weather.

Visit PigGear for a custom made cover up so that you don’t have to worry about the cold weather.

Since the demand was so high on this product, I decided to continue making it. Hoddies are great and they are even better with a piggy inside. Gordy  is showing us how much he enjoys it.

Congrats to Arnold

Looks like we have  a pretty popular pig up in Tennessee these days.
Here are a few words from Katelyn:
He has now become a local celebrity. Yesterday, he was
in a pet show to benefit breast cancer research(that explains the pink bow in the pictures). He was such a hit! I believe he will be in just about every newspaper around here!
He posed for so many pictures… this show is mainly just for dogs, but they have a most unusual pet category and he won first place!!! He also placed first in the so ugly, I’m cute category! We were advanced to the final round of best in show, but he was beat out by a silly ole dog!
That is okay though, we will get them next year!!I was so proud of him.. he acted so good and enjoyed all of the attention. By the end of the day he was worn completely out. We had to do a lot of running around for those little short legs!

I want to thank everyone for your interest in our mini pigs. Unfortunately, we have stopped breeding  do to the overwhelming population of mini pigs in shelters.  To all of you that have done your research, I commend you.

Our site will remain up for informational purposes and for referral to reputable breeders and shelter information.

I do still make mini pig harnesses and coverups as well as offer soap and other products on my PigGear  site.
