Now that cold weather is coming in pretty fast, are you ready for it? Better yet, is your piggy ready? Visit PigGear to order your mini pig cover-up before it gets too cold.

This is basically just a reminder to get your order in early so that you will have it before it gets cold. Now is when everyone starts to think about it but doesn’t order until the snow starts to fall. Once it gets cold out I get over whelmed with orders and sometimes there is a wait time since I make them all by hand.  I tried to keep a wide range of color choices but the more popular ones go pretty fast.

For all of you that are interested in booties for your babies, I give up. I tried to make them on numerous occasions and I’m just not comfortable selling them. One reason is that I really don’t like the way they look, but the biggest reason is because I’m afraid that the piggy will get hoof rot from the moisture that would get built up in them. So to be safe and to keep your baby safe, I decided to void the challenge.

I get a ton of emails from people looking for good mini pig breeders in their area. I put a breeders directory here  and hope to have enough reputable breeders listed so that my visitors won’t have to search forever looking for someone they can trust. I have also included some mini pig vets and pig rescues.
If you happen to know of a mini pig breeder/vet/rescue that you trust, please contact me so that I can add them.  I will contact every one of them before I add them to my site and ask them a few question to determine their validity. I will not list piggy mill type operations. Or people claiming to be a rescue just wanting a hand out. Please make sure the rescue facility is a  501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation.

I have included a rating/review  system on the directory, so please offer your opinion. Even though someone has a great review on my directory site, that does not mean that they are actually honest reviews ( people lie to get your business).

Ask them the following questions before committing to your purchase:
  1. Do you have the parents on the property? ( See how big they are full grown to get an idea of how big your pig will get )
  2. How old are the parents? ( Not full grown until age 3 )
  3. Are your pigs vet checked and up to date on shots? ( Most people don’t use a vet and don’t’ give shots. )
  4. Are they bottle fed or do they stay with their mom for at least 4 weeks. ( It is healthier for the baby to get the nutrition from their mom )
  5. If something happens where I can’t keep my baby, will you take it back (most of the time they will but you won’t get your money back)
  6. Do they offer support if you have a problem. ( Get a phone number )
Hope this helps
If you happen to find one in another state and it needs to be shipped to you, please read my post “When Pigs Fly“. Most people use Delta to ship their pigs. Read that post and you will see why I will never use them again.
Once you get your pig, you should start harness training instantly. I have custom line of pig harnesses, cover-ups and accessories I call Pig Gear.

Yes there are different breeds of mini pigs. That doesn’t mean that mini pigs, micro mini pigs, teacup pigs, etc… are the different breeds. All that means is that some people are pretty creative in the way they categorize them.

The below two breeds are the most popular in the states and crossing them has allowed breeders to come up with some pretty unique colors and sizes.

  1. Miniature Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs –  These pigs are the most common and the kind that we have bred. Their pot belly is a true sign and that doesn’t mean that they have been over fed, that just means that they are healthy. With that being said, I have seen some that ARE over fed and reach to weights of over 100 pounds. But the normal healthy  weight of a Miniature Vietnamese Potbellied Pig is around 50-60 pounds. They are on average 14-16 inches tall. These piggies also have cute little smooshed up noses.
  2. Juliana – other names for this breed is Juliani and mini painted pigs. One thing that makes this breed so popular is the fact that they stay smaller than the miniature pot bellied breed. Don’t be fooled though, some breeders will claim that their piglets  are Julianas but if the entire  is not spotted, then they are not pure bred.  A healthy weight for this breed is  15-30 pounds and about 10-12 inches tall.

We bought a male Juliana/Potbellied cross to breed to our mini potbelly sow in the hopes of raising a smaller more apartment friendly piggy. Unfortunately our little guy couldn’t do the job so he just kinda hangs around now. He is still pretty small weighing in at aprox. 38 lbs and is 13 inches tall.
